AI-driven repair and maintenance for 117,500+ Penske trucks improve fleet operations, save millions

AI-driven solutions improve fleet uptime, optimize maintenance and solve problems before they arise
Challenge

Penske Transportation Solutions manages over 440,000 vehicles across 2,600 locations and 980 maintenance facilities, primarily in North America. With 2.8 million repairs a year at a cost of ~$600 million, Penske wanted a solution to help its ~10,000 technicians quickly diagnose issues and implement repairs, minimizing downtime and avoiding costly repeat repairs.

Solution

In 2019, Penske partnered with Hitachi Digital Services to develop an AI/ML, Cloud (AWS) and IoT solution. Now, in 2025, the AI-driven solution is in use across 117,500+ Penske lease trucks. It uses Penske fleet data to offer diagnostic and guided repair support to 11,500 technicians across 990 locations servicing Penske truck engines and telematic systems.

In 2022, Penske and Hitachi Digital Services developed a second solution – an AI-based proactive diagnostics model. Now used on 150,000+ vehicles and set for expansion across Penske’s fleet, it effectively extends Penske’s guided repair model to anticipating problems and scheduling repairs and maintenance before failures occur on the road, so avoiding critical and costly breakdowns.

Result
  • Reduction in diagnostic and repair time. A saving of 15 minutes per repair delivers millions in annual savings alongside savings as a result of predictive maintenance.
  • Improved fleet uptime. Reduced downtime, preventing more than 90,000 breakdowns a year.
  • Decrease in repeat repairs.
  • AI-driven centralized knowledge hub. A Gen AI and automation-powered knowledge hub future-proofs operations against technician shortages.

Key benefits include:

Millions in annual savings
through reduction in
diagnostic and repair time

Preventing over 90,000
breakdowns annually

AI-driven centralized
knowledge hub
