A Regional Transmission Organization Accelerates Grid Planning with Industrial AI

Hitachi and NVIDIA helped this RTO AI-supercharge its grid interconnection queue process – modernizing generator interconnection workflows to speed the safe integration of new energy sources
Challenge

A regional transmission organization (RTO) needed to address a growing grid modernization bottleneck: generator interconnection studies were taking too long to support rising electricity demand and unlock new energy capacity.

This RTO manages reliability across a large multi-state footprint, where exhaustive analysis and simulation are essential to protect grid stability. Its initial objective was clear: reduce generator interconnection analysis times by 80% while helping customers make faster, better-informed decisions.

Solution

Hitachi Group companies (Method, Global Logic, Hitachi Energy, and more), NVIDIA and the RTO partnered to create an integrated industrial AI solution for generator interconnection.

The program combines advanced AI with accelerated computing infrastructure to improve economic and asset modeling, analytics workloads, workstream optimization, and data/software architecture. The integrated solution brings together an AI-based power simulation algorithm, Hitachi iQ-accelerated calculations, augmented simulation modeling, predictive analytics, and design and engineering services.

The work also includes GPU-accelerated analytics workloads, agentic AI for optimizing workstreams, and an AI-optimized data and software architecture. The regional transmission organization guides the integration to ensure the solution aligns with operational requirements, customer experience goals and industry regulations.

Result

The partnership is designed to make grid planning faster, more intelligent and more responsive to capacity pressures.

  • Initial objectives target an 80% reduction in generator interconnection analysis times.
  • The solution is intended to support safer, faster integration, and use of additional energy sources across the grid.
  • Planning speed and efficiency are expected to improve, helping the organization address capacity shortages, grid reliability and emergency response needs.
  • Subsequent partnership objectives will focus on alternative energy integration challenges and power transmission constraints.
