A Regional Transmission Organization Accelerates Grid Planning with Industrial AI
A regional transmission organizationΒ (RTO)Β needed to address a growing grid modernization bottleneck: generator interconnection studies were taking too long to support rising electricity demand andΒ unlockΒ new energy capacity.
This RTOΒ manages reliability across a large multi-state footprint, where exhaustive analysis and simulation are essential to protect grid stability. ItsΒ initialΒ objectiveΒ was clear: reduce generator interconnection analysis times by 80% while helping customers make faster, better-informed decisions.Β
HitachiΒ Group companies (Method,Β Global Logic, Hitachi Energy, andΒ more),Β NVIDIA and theΒ RTOΒ partnered to create anΒ integrated industrial AI solution for generator interconnection.Β
The program combines advanced AI with accelerated computing infrastructure to improve economic and asset modeling, analytics workloads, workstream optimization,Β and data/software architecture. The integrated solution brings together an AI-based power simulation algorithm, HitachiΒ iQ-accelerated calculations, augmented simulation modeling, predictive analytics, and design and engineering services.Β
The work also includes GPU-accelerated analytics workloads, agentic AI forΒ optimizingΒ workstreams, and an AI-optimized data and software architecture. The regional transmission organization guides the integration to ensure the solution aligns with operational requirements, customer experienceΒ goalsΒ and industry regulations.Β
The partnership is designed to make grid planning faster, moreΒ intelligentΒ and more responsive to capacity pressures.Β
- InitialΒ objectivesΒ target an 80% reduction in generator interconnection analysis times.Β
- The solution is intended to support safer, faster integration,Β and use ofΒ additionalΒ energy sources across the grid.Β
- Planning speed and efficiency are expected to improve, helping the organization address capacity shortages, gridΒ reliabilityΒ and emergency response needs.Β
- SubsequentΒ partnershipΒ objectivesΒ will focus on alternative energy integration challenges and power transmission constraints.Β
